Wheelhouses

Barge Style Wheelhouses

Sea Glaze collapsible wheelhouse in acylic and marine grade alluminium

The barge style narrowboat lends itself ideally to the incorporation of a wheelhouse. These are available in various forms from the superb (but pricey) marine style aluminium and acrylic offering above from Seaglaze through more traditional hard wood designs down to very simple pram hoods.

In the past wheelhouses on narrowboats have been very much a non event with the increased air draft being a major concern. The Barge Style overcomes this by lowering the wheelhouse floor thus enabling the overall air draft to be reduced dramatically. Even with the wheelhouse erected it is still possible pass under many bridges and if the need arises you can simply lower the wheelhouse roof.

A quick word of warning.

Wheelhouses do take up some cabin space. If you are going to use this lost space in the wheelhouse to incorporate a dinette then they make perfect sense, if however you just intend it to keep the rain of the back of your neck then this loss of space needs to be considered carefully!
