All of our boats are supplied with full domestic style central heating supplementary heating can be provided by a coal/wood burning stove. Although stoves of this type have long being associated with the inland waterways we have to point out that safety concerns have recently being highlighted in regard to the operation and installation of such stoves. Background on one incident involving such a stove is contained in the report below-
Marine Accident Investigation Branch report on the investigation of the fire on board the canal boat Lindy Lou
At the present time we have no legal or industry standards in the UK for the installation of multi fuel stoves, so at the present time we are observing the Canal Boatbuilders Association advice-
If installing a Solid Fuel Stove, it is advised that the builder ensure the installation follows the manufacturers’ instructions. That the equipment is suitable for marine use and that they give adequate hearth dimensions and to ensure the area is free from falling debris.
Unfortunately this will restrict the suitability of many previously popular multi fuel stoves, but in the light of recent events we feel that this is the safest approach to take.
Considering the above we think you have to ask the question-
“Do you really need the addition of a multi fuel stove?”
