Lining

Lining

Fit 1 Fit 2

The lining of a boat is probably the most important element of the fit out the rest of the interior being built on it, not only is the finish important but its anchorage to the steel work is fundamental to the rest of the fit out.

We take care to make provision for attaching the battening that secures the lining boards from a very early stage, the walls in your house are rigid and so why shouldn’t they be on your boat?
The battening is screwed to the steel and we wouldn’t even consider adopting trying to glue these in place using the likes of “No-Nails” etc. (Some do!)

The materials used in the lining out vary depending on the customers individual choices while traditional veneered ply and block board with hard wood trims still remains very popular more alternative finishes and materials are becoming more popular.

Fit 3 Fit 4

A more traditional boat might be lined out using 9mm Ash (Or other wood) faced plywood and solid ash (Or other wood) hardwood trims to match. The trim is a heavy trim manufactured specifically to our own design.
On boats using real wood finishes we try to maintain real wood throughout and do not use MDF without it would be the only material ideally suited for a specific application.

We can also complete full or part linings in solid hard wood planking, but please bare in mind that we offer this option to achieve a very durable high quality finish it is not intended to compete with the common practice of cladding walls in thin cheap softwoods purely for convenience and cost cutting.

The use of Kronospan (Melamine) finishes is becoming increasingly popular over recent years this can be supplied in a range of wood and other more alternative effects. (Including silver!)
Although Kronsopan is composed of a laminated 8mm MDF board the board itself is of a extremely high density and is laminated with melamine to both faces. With the edges sealed it offers no greater susceptibility to moisture than any other finish.

The main advantages of a Kronospan are :-

  • It produces a very realistic wood effect while maintaining a constant cost. If you would like walnut finish it will cost exactly the same. The wood finish remains equally convincing due to the continued use of hard wood trims.

  • Consistant future finish unlike real wood which ages Kronospan will remain the same colour and finish for years to come without fading or darkening.
    ~
  • Durability the finish is very tough and does not scratch or dent easily and is fully washable.

  • Maintenance free it will not ever need a fresh coat of varnish.

  • Makes the ideal facing for wet areas.

You can see that Kronospan does have some very good plus points especially in the residential and hire fleet market but the choice remains yours we offer both traditional wood or Kronospan for the same price.

Fit 5 Fit 6

Another very important feature of the lining is the floor we use a high quality 3/4 Inch external grade plywood (Not concrete shuttering ply) this forms a very firm floor to fit out on that will not delaminate in later years to become soft and springy. Floor coverings can be laid directly on top of this including solid wood planking or even a Welsh slate floor!
