DIY Support

DIY Support

Unlike many companies we are happy to support you throughout your DIY project both prior to purchase and through to completion. Obviously we actually build boats rather than just mass produce steel work! We therefore have a wealth of knowledge on both the technical and legal elements involved.

We have no objections whatsoever to customers viewing our fully fitted boats in build for examples of how things are put together and actively encourage the DIY fitter to copy the methods used.
We can supply all materials required to complete a DIY fit out and where it is more practical can provide the details of where materials can be sourced directly.

To make your project a success we offer:-

  • Prior to buying a honest frank discussion about what you are considering undertaking and an estimate of what the final completed project is likely to cost.
  • The chance to view boats in build and completed rather than just bare hulls.
  • Assistance in choosing materials and appropriate methods to use in the fit out.
  • Assistance in choosing electrical, water and heating systems and their installation.
  • Membership of the www.canalboatbits.co.uk project discount scheme giving you a minimum of 10% discount off all list prices.
  • Free access to our online library that contains the full Recreation Craft Directive including all of the ISO’s etc that legally need to be complied with.
  • Full documentation to the point of completion at delivery plus full assistance in preparing the remaining paperwork to fully comply with the legal requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive.
  • Complete installation packages can be supplied for electrical and heating systems etc. along with instruction and support to enable them to be DIY installed.

Boat building, whether that be on a DIY basis or professional basis now falls under the powers of the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) - it is no longer legal to just build a boat!
Without getting into the politics of Europe the RCD is largely a good thing for the customer in that its main purpose is to set down a number of minimum standards for the construction of a new boat.

The RCD is a complicated piece of legislation and the temptation to ignore it is obvious, however the legal implications for a professional builder are very real while the legal ramifications may be less for a DIY builder they still do exist, while their boat, however well built, without the correct documentation may will be an  unsellable “lemon” worth far less than the money invested in it!

We therefore endeavour to provide full assistance to our customers to enable them to produce safe RCD compliant boats that will provide a good investment for the future.

You can view a brief outline of the Recreation Craft Directive HERE.
